Topspin Tennis is a local tennis centre at District Park, Broadmeadow and they are currently running a great participation program to get kids into the sport. MLC Hotshots, sponsored locally by Insight, uses smaller sized racquets and courts and low compression balls to make the game easier to pick up for children. We asked Richard from Topspin Tennis about the program and his business.
How long have you been in business?
I started Topspin Tennis in 1996 at Adamstown and Newcastle Uni. In 2010 we started running the tennis centre at Broadmeadow.
Tell us about the programs you have running
Our most popular programs include MLC hotshots, junior squads, social comps for adults, tournaments and cardio tennis.
What is cardio tennis?
Cardio Tennis is a high energy workout you do to music with a heart monitor. It helps to get you fit and it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played tennis before.
Tell us about the MLC Hotshots program
The program is for kids between 5 and 12 years. Basically everything is scaled down. We have smaller rackets and lighter balls. We also have special mini courts. There are three stages: red, orange and green. That way the equipment gets larger as the kids grow. It has been a very successful program and is great for getting younger kids into the game.
Why did you decide to run a tennis coaching business?
I started working for another coach but, like most tennis coaches, I got to a stage where I wanted to branch out on my own and it went from there.
Where does your passion for tennis come from?
I started playing when I was 8 or 9 and enjoyed it from the start. As I played more and more I loved the competitive side of tennis and the challenges it provides. I was privileged to travel to many countries and have some amazing experiences. It’s a sport you can play your whole life.
What do you offer at your courts?
We have great, friendly service. We have lots of different programs for people to join. We also have a pro shop with top class stringing services. And we have plenty of courts, so there’s almost always one available.
Where are you located?
Our primary location is in Broadmeadow and we also coach at Lambton Park.
